All of the 373 votes are in and 51% of our voters agreed that this was their favorite:

Logo created by Tedford Chan

This logo will be the foundational design for the official FCAT word-mark. Slight modifications will be made to this particular design based on the collective advice from design professionals, including those on the FCAT Logo Adjudication Committee.

Meet the winners:

1st Place – Tedford Chan, SIAT

Tedford Chan

Our winning designer, Tedford, is a student of the School of Interactive Arts and Technology. He’s just a few courses away from graduating and is currently on a co-op work term in Ontario with Research in Motion (RIM), the makers of the Blackberry.  He is collaborating with a team that does Interface Design and other kinds of design work.

When considering the logo competition, Tedford explained that he simply employed some of the research and conceptualization techniques that he learned during his time in SIAT. He went to a bookstore and looked for inspiration, then he researched the faculty by looking at the website. He stumbled upon a quote from our Dean, Cheryl Geisler:  ”(FCAT’s) goal is to create the networks that will bind together the intellect and creativity of our faculty, our programs, and our students, to link us to our community and to the world, to explore, to analyze, to create, and to change.”  He especially recalls the words “bind” and “link” and used this in the creation of his design and the layout of the typography.

Tedford said that this was not his first concept, however, he was happily surprised to hear that he had won $300, which he will either spend at the SFU Bookstore, or the SFU Microcomputer Store.

2nd Place – Paul Yuan, SIAT

Paul is a student in his last semester of the Informatics stream at SIAT. He is interested in Web Application development, which is a career that benefits from a good understanding of the elements of design. He recalls taking design courses at SIAT, including the Graphic Design course and the Information Design course, which aided the development of his design skills.

For his logo design, Paul decided that he wanted it to look clean. “Along with the SFU logo, I didn’t want it to go too all out and not look professional.”

Paul was surprised to hear that he got 2nd place out of the 65 logos that were submitted. He has won a $100 gift certificate, which he has chosen to have for the SFU Bookstore.

3rd Place – Carmen Hung, Communication

Carmen Hung

Carmen has always been interested in design. She has taken the publishing design course at SFU, so she had an idea of how to use the necessary software for creating her design. She said that she was “happy to make it into the top three”, considering she was going against many SIAT design students. She claims that she enjoys variety and a combination of both writing and designing, and that is why her major is Communication. “It allows me to do multiple things. I can both write and implement a layout for example.”

When considering how to design the FCAT logo, Carmen said that she was excited about the new Faculty and the fact that you could combine Communication courses with those from Contemporary Arts and Interactive Arts + Technology. With this in mind, she decided that the tight kerning and leading of the words represented how related the different programs really are. She suggested the logo showed “the collaboration of the schools”.

Carmen explained that after missing out on the deadline for the SFU Connect Logo Competition, that she better enter this one or she would also regret it. Good thing she did! She won herself $50, which she has decided to spend at the SFU Bookstore.

Congratulations not only to Tedford, Paul, and Carmen, but everyone that submitted a logo. The panel of judges was very impressed. The new FCAT logo should begin appearing this spring, so keep your eyes peeled. Thanks to everyone who voted!
